What Size Sharps Container Does Your Clinic Actually Need?

Buying a sharps container sounds like the simplest purchase a clinic makes, right up until the wrong one arrives. Too small and someone is wrestling a full bin out of a treatment room mid-list. Too big and it sits half-empty for eight months, which is its own problem — an open container accumulating sharps for the better part of a year is not good practice.

Why the mobile answer is different

The reliable method is simply to watch your first container: note the date you opened it and the date it reached the fill line. That gives you a real replacement interval for your clinic, which is worth more than any generic estimate.

What to look for beyond size

  • One-way aperture — sharps go in, nothing comes back out, including if the container tips.
  • Locking or screw lid — a temporary closure for transport and a permanent lock for final disposal.
  • Puncture-resistant walls — the whole point; thin containers fail at exactly the wrong moment.
  • Clear fill line — so "three-quarters" isn't a judgement call made by whoever is closest.
  • Colour and labelling — yellow with biohazard marking is the convention in Australian clinical settings for a reason: it's recognised instantly by everyone including your waste contractor.
