Luer-Lock vs Luer-Slip Syringes: Which Should Your Clinic Use?
July 13, 2026 · Pro-Dose Equipment
When a syringe uses a separate needle, the tip connection matters. There are two: luer-lock and luer-slip. Here's how to choose.
Luer-lock
A luer-lock tip has a threaded collar that screws the needle on for a positive mechanical lock. It won't pop off under pressure — important when injecting viscous solutions or working quickly. For most clinical work, luer-lock is the safer default.
Luer-slip
A luer-slip tip holds the needle by friction — push on, pull off. It's faster for quick needle changes and bench tasks where high pressure isn't a factor. Same barrel quality; just a different connection.
When to choose which
Choose luer-lock when: injecting under pressure, using thicker solutions, or when a needle popping off would be dangerous or wasteful. Choose luer-slip when: doing fast, low-pressure bench work and you value quick swaps. When unsure, default to luer-lock.
Fixed-needle option
For subcutaneous protocols you often skip the choice entirely with a fixed-needle insulin syringe — no separate needle, minimal waste.
Whichever you choose, pair with the right gauge (see the gauge guide), prep the site, and dispose of sharps in a compliant container.
